The Ikamva Labantu family were emotionally charged at their fundraiser and auction held at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Cape Town on Thursday 06 February 2020, when the event exceeded all expectations.
Helen Lieberman (Founder of Ikamva) has been with the Ikamva Labantu Foundation for over 55 years. Her story was told by herself at the event and was received with a standing ovation.
In 1963 Helen Lieberman and other courageous activists responded to the unjust and inhumane conditions of South African Apartheid by setting up survival initiatives in the Western Cape. Thirty years later in 1992 the coordination of these initiatives was formalised and *Ikamva Labantu*, meaning “*future of the people”* was launched as a non- governmental and non- profit organisation.
Today they work throughout Cape Town’s township communities towards a more just society where human rights can be fully actualised. Their work focuses on early childhood development, afterschool initiatives for children, and the wellbeing of older persons.
They strive to stay true to their beginning’s as a grassroot organization and to always follow the lead of the communities they work with. Their field workers, most of whom are born and raised in Cape Town’s townships enable them to keep their finger on the pulse of community needs.
The event raised R 2.9 million and everyone enjoyed giving. The generosity of the Cape town business community was overwhelming and it was no problem for individual pledges to start at R 100 000. The items for auction sold for between R 15 000,00 and R 130 000,00.
A combined contribution for a JoJo the Clown show and party for the children of Ikamva achieved R 100 000,00.
A special dinner with the Ikamva Mamas & Helen sold three times for R 100 000.
A beautiful tapestry created by one of the Mamas of Ikamva sold for R100 000.
It was a record breaker and a night that will be remembered forever providing *Ikamva Labantu* with well needed funds
